Master’s Degree in Psychology

At our faculty, the Master’s degree in Psychology can only be obtained in full-time study. The study programme provides in-depth and specialised knowledge and skills in the basic psychological disciplines in the following main areas: counselling and school psychology, clinical psychology and psychopathology, personality psychology and developmental psychology. A strong emphasis is also placed on research training and internships in practice settings. (More information about the course structure can be found at www.pedf.cuni.cz – Karolinka or SIS.)
The study is completed by a state final examination, which consists of (A) a defence of the thesis and (B) a part consisting of an examination of compulsory subjects (educational and counselling psychology, clinical psychology and psychopathology) and an elective subject (personality psychology or developmental psychology).
The study programme is designed to comply with the international requirements of the European Diploma in Psychology.
Graduate
The graduate understands the basic paradigms of psychology in their historical development and in the present. He/she has a deeper knowledge of all the so-called basic disciplines (personality, general, developmental, social, educational psychology). He/she also has the academic knowledge and skills to enter specialisation training in counselling psychology, clinical psychology and other professional specialisations (courses in counselling and school psychology, general and special psychopathology, child and adolescent psychopathology, psychological diagnosis of children and adults, psychotherapy). A strong emphasis is placed on psychological research skills, especially educational phenomena, and on internships in both school counseling and health care (clinical) settings.
Above all, the graduate masters at an advanced level the basic methodology of research work as a tool for orientation in conceptual and theoretical schemes of psychological work. He/she is proficient in the methods of psychological work (identification, diagnosis, intervention, therapy) with children and adolescents (individual level), with groups and with institutions (e.g. work with the climate and ethos of the school). They are able to intervene appropriately in the processes of education, teaching and learning, and can work with teachers and educators. Is proficient in the main methods of correcting dysfunctions and disorders of clients (especially children and adolescents).
Goal of study
The aim of the study is to prepare graduates for the profession of psychologist with an emphasis on the field of education and upbringing and education (school psychologist, counselling psychologist). Graduates will also be prepared to work in health and special care settings, especially to work with children and youth across the spectrum (with educational difficulties, developmental disorders and personality disorders). In other professional specialisations, he/she will acquire a foundation that will enable him/her to enter forms of lifelong (specialised) education in the relevant area of the psychological profession. Thus, he will find employment in a wide range of institutions as a school psychologist (especially in connection with the expected increase in school counselling centres), counselling psychologist, psychologist in special institutions (SPC, SVP, social welfare institutions, institutions for the performance of institutional or protective education, children’s homes, institutions for the treatment of addictions, asylum institutions, social service institutions, employment offices, etc.). Academically oriented graduates are prepared for entry into doctoral programmes not only in educational psychology but also in other programmes at other universities.
